Find A Trail
MichiganTrailMaps.com is a resource web site that encourages trail usage by providing people with the information and maps they need to find and enjoy paths in Michigan. The site was established in 2010 due to concerns over the shrinking coverage of trails in newspapers and other traditional media and the poor and even inaccurate maps being provided by government agencies.
The focus at MichiganTrailMaps.com are its detailed maps that are produced with GIS coordinates, satellite imagery, USGS topographical data and field research, i.e. actually hiking or mountain biking the trails, to make them the most accurate maps available.
At MichiganTrailMaps.com non-motorized trails can be searched by activity, distance, difficulty or by county, region of the state or the park where they are located. Each entry features a trail guide and introduction as well as a map that can be downloaded and printed to be used on the trail.
MichiganTrailMaps.com also publishes Trail Mix, a free monthly e-newsletter, as well as a series of commercial maps covering the classic backpacking trails of Michigan. In 2011, the publisher released the fourth edition of Jim DuFresne’s Isle Royale National Park: Foot Trails & Water Routes. DuFresne, the author of more than 20 guidebooks, is also the main contributor to Trail Talk, MichiganTrailMaps.com’s blog that provides commentary, views, humor, and advice for Michigan’s trail users.
Advertising and Promotion at MichiganTrailMaps.com
Through its web site and specialized publications, MichiganTrailMaps.com works with businesses and tourism associations to access non-motorized trail users, a rapidly growing but hard to reach slice of the tourism market. Businesses can utilize ads and links on the web site, e-newsletter or in the books and maps that are sold online or through a growing network of distributors and stores.
Visitors bureaus, conservancies and economic development corporations can contract MichiganTrailMaps.com to research, map and post online the trails in their area. The information and maps can then be utilized on other web sites or re-purposed into custom publications and brochures that can be sold or handed out at information centers.
