Region: Heartland

Located in the quaint village of Bellevue is Dyer Kiln Historic Site, where you can see the remains of the first limestone kiln in Eaton County. In the 1800s the kiln was used to burn the rock for the production of cement, and among the buildings still held together by Bellevue mortar is Michigans state capitol in Lansing. The limestone used in the kiln was mined across the street in the West and East Quarries. The abandoned limestone quarries, long since flooded into small lakes, are today the centerpiece of Keehne Environmental Area, an Eaton County park named for Edward Keehne. At 17 acres, Keehne Environmental Area is not big, not developed with waterslides or playscapes, not even that ...

The 279-acre Kehl Lake Natural Area north of Northport features 2,500 feet of undeveloped shoreline along the 74-acre lake, paths that wander through an extensive hardwood-conifer swamps and excellent birding, including the opportunities to spot a blue-headed vireo or Blackburnian warbler. But for many visitors the most impressive sights are above them; old growth white pines and towering hemlocks whose needles and branches reach for the sky. Even the preserves Old Birch, whose branches hasnt spouted foliage in years, makes you pause and wonder at its massive trunk. The lake and the trees first captured the attention of Ottawa and Chippewa tribes who used the area for seasonal settlements ...

There are no spectacular views from Krumwiede Forest Reserve. There are no panoramas of Lake Michigan or islands or golden dunes towering above the shoreline. In the middle of the summer, when the foliage is thick and green, there are no views at all. But in October, climb the ridge that dominates the 110-acre tract and the hardwoods will be burning with autumn reds, yellows, oranges and purples. At times like this every step of your hike is a sight to behold.Located almost due east of Glen Arbor and within a mile of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in three different directions, Krumwiede is Leelanau Conservancys first forest reserve. When the Krumwiede family donated a conservation ...

9791 N Lakeshore Dr
MI 49460
United States

Region: Lake Michigan

There is a tendency to visit Kirk Park in the summer and head straight to the beach. You park in the picnic area, jump out of the car and hightail it down a paved path to Lake Michigan where you jump into the surf, roll in the sand or get scorched by the sun. Then you go home, usually waterlogged, sunburnt and with half a dune in your bathing suit. That's why a unique time - some say the best time - to visit this Ottawa County Park is spring or fall. With no people, no bugs and no August temperatures to tempt you into the water, you'll discover the rest of this natural area and it's a gem. At 68 acres and with 2,000 feet of lake front, Kirk Park is not large. In fact, it's basically on ...
