The Lakeshore Trail is posted in a clockwise direction with a path leaving the parking area to the east and immediately skirting just above Wildwood Lake. Within a couple hundred yards you arrive at post No. 19, the junction where the trail from Overlook Picnic Area arrives at the loop. The next segment, the 0.4 miles to the rental cabins, is the only portion away from the park road as you follow the east shore of the lake.

What use to be Wildwood Picnic Area at Mile 0.5, is now the site of the park\'s rental cabins, the reason for the nice beach, volleyball net, restrooms and picnic tables. The trail skirts the fence around the rentals and then returns to the shoreline to skirt around the swampy south arm of Wildwood Lake.

Within a half mile you pass post No. 21 and just before Mile 1 arrive at post No. 22, marking a spur that descends to the boat launch. Stay left to remain in the woods and shortly will climb a hill where at the top are a pair of benches and a scenic view of Valley Lake. You descend to post No. 23 in a located small picnic area with restrooms and reached at Mile 1.75 .

The rest of the loop stays close to the west bank of Valley Lake but the park road is well above you. You can enjoy the water without having to see or even listen to the vehicles of other visitors.

This is another interesting stretch that lasts 0.75 miles before you arrive at the spillway. A narrow path hugs the east side of the spillway and returns you to the trailhead parking lot. Almost directly across the park road the Beach Trail is posted and leads to the Heron Lake day-use area.
